Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in adults aged 20–74. High blood sugar damages retinal blood vessels, causing leaks and scar tissue formation (diabetic retinopathy). Early stages show no symptoms, but advanced cases lead to permanent vision loss. Annual dilated eye exams are critical for diabetics. A 2023 Johns Hopkins study found that tight glucose control reduces retinopathy progression by 76%. Pair medical care with a low-glycemic diet rich in leafy greens and fish.
